TL;DR

HubSpot Prospecting Agent finds contacts, researches accounts and prepares outreach inside HubSpot. The public rate is 100 credits per outreach recommendation, presented as $1 per lead, not per sent email or meeting. Access descriptions differ across HubSpot's pages, so confirm your subscription and seat requirements before budgeting. Your team still defines the plays, connects senders, chooses review settings and handles the work that remains outside automated email.

HubSpot Prospecting Agent connects account research with outreach inside the CRM your sales team already uses. It is not a reason to assume you can hand over the entire SDR role. The buying decision depends on which work the agent executes, which work your team configures, and when credits are consumed.

This guide uses HubSpot documentation and pricing checked on November 2, 2026, not logged-in product testing. Two details deserve attention before you buy: HubSpot's pages disagree about subscription access, and its billing descriptions require more care than the headline "$1 per lead" suggests.

What HubSpot Prospecting Agent actually does

The agent monitors an audience you define, identifies contacts and prepares personalized outreach inside HubSpot. Its operating instructions are called plays. You choose company segments, target personas, relevant signals and a daily contact-suggestion limit. Suggestions depend on companies showing signals, so that limit is a ceiling, not a promised supply of prospects. The setup documentation describes both company monitoring and contact selection.

Research can incorporate associated CRM engagements from the past year, including calls, meetings, notes, form submissions and page views. You also supply selling context: what you sell, your value proposition and the problems you solve. HubSpot can generate that context from your website, but you can edit it before using it.

Finding new contacts is optional. Turn off "Source contacts for me" to work only with manually enrolled contacts, including existing HubSpot records. The product page also describes sourcing through connected providers. Decide whether you need net-new contact discovery or outreach to records you already own before configuring a play. Those are different operating needs, even though both can consume agent credits.

HubSpot Prospecting Agent access

Confirm access in your actual account before buying a subscription or assigning seats. The public documentation does not give one consistent entitlement answer.

The dedicated setup guide, updated October 30, lists Starter, Professional and Enterprise across Marketing, Sales, Service, Data and Content Hubs, plus Smart CRM Professional and Enterprise. The product page also lists Starter, Professional and Enterprise. However, HubSpot's AI-powered prospecting overview, updated October 23, still lists Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise for Prospecting Agent.

Ask HubSpot to confirm your subscription and intended workflow rather than treating either description as universal. Then check the other access requirements:

  • Seat: the credits guide allows paid-seat and Partner Seat users to consume credits, but not free or View-only users.

  • Permissions: setup requires Super Admin or Access prospecting agent permissions. Prospecting agent admin permissions cover configuration and play changes; assignment permissions cover enrollment.

  • AI settings: the documented switches include generative AI access, CRM data, customer conversation data and files data.

  • Sender: outreach needs the connected inbox selected by the play's sender settings. Verify the owner mapping and fallback sender, not just the person who configured the agent.

Keep standalone sequences access separate. HubSpot's sequences documentation lists Sales Hub or Service Hub Professional/Enterprise and an assigned Sales or Service seat. Do not automatically apply those requirements to every adaptive-agent workflow, or assume agent access grants every sequences feature.

HubSpot Prospecting Agent pricing

Budget against the outreach recommendation unit, not sent emails or booked meetings. The Product & Services Catalog lists 100 credits for recommending outreach for one lead and additional credits at $0.010 each. HubSpot presents the agent price as $1 per lead recommended for outreach on its product page.

Read the rate and trigger descriptions together:

Catalog

"Recommend outreach for one lead": 100 credits

This is the listed billable unit, not a meeting or email-send price.

Product page

"$1 for each lead prospecting agent recommends outreach for"

The headline describes recommended outreach, not a guaranteed result.

Setup guide

Credits are used when it generates personalized email outreach for each lead, whether recommended or manually enrolled, with additional steps based on play settings

Existing contacts and manual enrollment do not avoid consumption when outreach is generated.

Do not assume approval mode delays billing until you click Send. Equally, these descriptions do not establish that every research action or every follow-up email costs another 100 credits. The public evidence does not settle regeneration, re-enrollment or all play-specific extra steps. Inspect account credit activity and obtain clarification for the operations you intend to repeat.

Your available budget also depends on the shared credit pool. Included credits follow the highest subscription allotment rather than adding together across products. They reset monthly and unused credits expire. Other usage-based tools consume the same pool; the catalog lists separate actions for those tools. Include any separately enabled intent or data tools in your budget.

The billing guide makes several controls worth checking before enrollment:

  • Without purchased capacity packs, usage-based features pause when included credits run out.

  • For additional credits purchased before September 16, 2026, auto-upgrade is the default. Purchases on or after that date default to pay-as-you-go. Check the actual account setting.

  • Auto-upgrade increases capacity for the remaining commitment term. Pay-as-you-go returns to the original monthly limit next usage cycle.

  • After a capacity-pack purchase, the account spend limit defaults to 50% above total monthly credits. Review it rather than assuming the purchased amount is a hard stop.

  • A feature-level cap limits consumption but does not reserve credits. Other tools can exhaust the pool first.

Set both account and agent limits before starting. Dividing an included allotment by the recommendation rate does not establish guaranteed lead capacity when credits are shared and play-specific consumption remains unresolved.

Who owns each step

Your team still owns the operating decisions around the agent. The documented automation is substantial, but it sits inside instructions, permissions and sender choices that someone must maintain.

Work

Documented agent role

Your team's responsibility or acceptance check

Audience and targeting

Monitors selected company segments and signals; suggests contacts matching personas

Choose segments, personas, signal topics and suggestion limits. Check whether suggested contacts fit.

Account research

Uses signals and recent associated CRM engagement

Verify the reason to reach out and whether the context supports the message.

Selling context

Can generate context from your website

Correct product descriptions, value propositions and claims before publishing the play.

Contact sourcing

Can enroll existing contacts or use a connected external provider

Choose the data source and confirm its separate commercial terms.

Drafting and approval

Generates personalized outreach; supports review or sending without review

Select the review policy and inspect factual accuracy before relaxing it.

Sending

Uses configured connected senders, timing and frequency controls

Check owner mapping, fallback inbox and send window. Demonstrate deliverability setup and monitoring responsibilities.

Calls and LinkedIn tasks

Configured sequences can include task reminders

Assign a person to execute manual tasks; confirm completion in the intended workflow.

Replies and handoff

Performance reporting includes replies and booked meetings

Demonstrate who handles responses, qualification, routing and the sales handoff.

Ongoing changes

Supports editing plays and reviewing performance

Own campaign experimentation and account for existing contacts retaining their original play version.

The research, sending and reporting roles above follow the agent setup guide; manual task semantics come from the sequences guide. Reporting a reply is not the same as owning the response. Require a demonstration of the work you expect to outsource rather than inferring it from a dashboard metric.

Adaptive email versus configured sequences

Choose adaptive outreach when you want the agent to determine email steps within your limits. Choose configured sequences when you want to define the steps yourself. Neither choice, by itself, proves autonomous execution across every channel.

In the agent documentation, "Agent determines steps" sends personalized emails that adapt to prospect actions, engagement and signals. You set maximum emails, minimum days between sends and the permitted send window. "Configure sequence steps" uses a user-configured sequence, with generated subject lines and email content available through smart subjects and blocks.

For channel ownership, inspect the step type. The standalone sequences guide distinguishes automated emails from manual email tasks, call reminders, LinkedIn InMail tasks and connection-request tasks. The documented LinkedIn tasks require manual action through the Sales Navigator integration. A multi-channel sequence should not be read as a promise that the agent makes calls or sends LinkedIn messages autonomously.

Two configuration limits also matter. Only one external contact-data source can be connected at a time; the setup guide lists Apollo, Surfe, ZoomInfo and Seamless. Do not assume their subscriptions or data costs are included. If Apollo will supply your contacts, review its costs separately in the Apollo pricing guide.

Play edits apply only to newly enrolled contacts. Existing enrollments retain the version published when they entered. When you change messaging or instructions, check which contacts will actually receive the revision.

How to evaluate it in your own account

Start with a small, review-first pilot that you can inspect closely. HubSpot says credit-consuming actions cannot run in sandbox accounts, so plan the documented credit controls before testing in your account.

Use observable acceptance checks:

  1. Verify access end to end. Have the intended operator create a play, enroll a contact and reach the review queue. Confirm the subscription, seat and permissions actually support your chosen route.

  2. Inspect research relevance. Review the detected signal, suggested persona and reason to reach out. Compare generated claims with the underlying account and CRM context.

  3. Check existing-contact behavior. Manually enroll records you already hold. Confirm the right context and sender are used, then inspect credit activity rather than assuming existing data makes generation free.

  4. Verify sender fallback. Check the configured fallback when an owner lacks a connected inbox. Confirm the sender identity before approving outreach.

  5. Reconcile consumption. Review Account & Billing > HubSpot Credits for usage and feature breakdowns. Ask HubSpot to clarify charges around generation, regeneration and re-enrollment where the activity does not answer them.

  6. Follow the workflow past Send. Observe task assignment and completion, reply handling, qualification and handoff. Demonstrate how your team manages deliverability and campaign changes.

Do not approve unattended sending merely because a draft reads well. The acceptance decision should include source accuracy, credit behavior and an accountable owner for what happens after outreach.

When it fits and when to look beyond it

Prospecting Agent is a stronger fit when you already operate in HubSpot and have someone who can own targeting, selling context, sender configuration and follow-through. Its documented connection between signals, CRM context and email generation is directly relevant to that setup.

Look beyond the agent alone if your goal is a fully operated outbound service, especially if you expect someone else to own channel execution, deliverability, replies and ongoing experiments. Ask for the complete workflow to be demonstrated and identify the remaining operator work. The AI SDR evaluation scorecard can help structure that comparison.

FAQ

Is HubSpot Prospecting Agent free?

It uses HubSpot Credits. Some subscriptions include credits, but that does not make usage unlimited. The catalog lists 100 credits per outreach recommendation; generation for manually enrolled leads can also consume credits under the setup guide.

Do I need Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise?

Not every current page says so. The dedicated setup guide lists broader access, including Starter across several Hubs, while the general overview still lists Sales Hub Professional/Enterprise. Confirm your account entitlement and seats before purchasing.

Does it send LinkedIn messages automatically?

The sequences documentation describes LinkedIn InMail and connection-request steps as manual tasks. Do not treat those reminders as autonomous LinkedIn sending. Verify the exact steps available in your account.

Can it send emails without approval?

Yes. The setup guide documents "Send without review" as well as reviewing and approving each message. Sending remains governed by the play's settings and connected sender.

Will editing a play update contacts already enrolled?

No. According to the setup guide, changes apply only to newly enrolled contacts. Existing contacts continue with the play version published at their original enrollment.
